“Here are the 10 winners of our first Ads Worth Spreading competition. With this competition, we're seeking to reverse the trend of online ads being aggressively forced on users. We want to nurture ads so good you choose to watch. On TED.com, ads run after our talks, not before. This means they can run longer than the TV-standard 30 seconds. And that's the key! In 2-3 minutes, there's enough time to really tell a story, share an idea, make an authentic human connection, become unforgettable. Instead of ambush, they offer pleasurable, intelligent engagement. The Burnt Biscuits

Thought Of the Day

Look at every path closely and deliberately. Try it as many times as you think necessary. Then ask yourself, and yourself alone, one question . . . Does this path have a heart? If it does, the path is good; if it doesn't it is of no use. Both paths lead nowhere; but one has a heart, the other doesn't. One makes for a joyful journey; as long as you follow it, you are one with it. The other will make you curse your life. One makes you strong; the other weakens you.

The House with 1000 Mirrors

Long ago in a small, far away village, there was a place known as the House with 1000 Mirrors. A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit. When he arrived, he bounced happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To his great surprise, he found himself staring at 1000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as fast as his. He smiled a great smile, and was answered with 1000 great smiles just as warm and friendly. As he left the house, he thought to himself, "This is a wonderful place. I will come back and visit it often."

In this same village, another little dog, who was not quite as happy as the first one, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the door. When he saw the 1000 unfriendly looking dogs staring back at him, he growled at them and was horrified to see 1000 little dogs growling back at him. As he left, he thought to himself, "That is a horrible place, and I will never go back there again."

MORAL: All the faces in the world are mirrors. What kind of reflections do you see in the faces of the people you meet depends on you. You have a choice!

Smoking : Break The Habit

no smoking day 2011 Today is No Smoking Day.

The person whose mind is always free from attachment, who has subdued the mind and senses, and who is free from desires, attains the supreme perfection of freedom from karma through renunciation.  Bhagavad Gita 18.49

* God categorically prohibited intoxicants once people had been psychologically prepared for this prohibition, and after they had realised their serious effects: O you who believe! Quran

* Habit is a dead thing, it is an action which has become automatic, and the more one fights it the more strength one gives to it. But really to drop something which has become a habit, you have to investigate it much more, which means going into the whole problem of why the mind cultivates the habit - that is, why the mind is inattentive. J Krishnamurti

* He who binds to himself a joy, does the winged life destroy. But he who kisses the joy as it flies, lives in Eternity's sunrise. William Blake

Here are some tips to going smoke free:

1. Set a date - No Smoking Day on Wednesday 09 March 2011 is a good time as you'll be stopping with more than a million other people. Use the days between now and then to plan.

2. Using a proven treatment can make it four times more likely that you'll succeed in stopping smoking

3. Reward yourself - plan some treats with the money you will save

4. Don't even have one cigarette - it's the first step back to 20-a-day

Did you know…

►Smoking is highest among 20-24 year olds - 32% of men and 30% of women smoke

►Two-thirds of smokers start before age 18.

►You don't have to wait long for the benefits to start once you stop smoking

Why should I stop smoking?

► Nobody likes to look old so by quitting smoking you can help to avoid early ageing

► Rediscover the taste of your favourite foods as your taste buds kick in

► It takes about ten minutes to smoke a cigarette, so a ten-a-day smoker can save nearly two hours a day when they quit. Over the course of a year, you can claim back a month of lost time!

► Think of all that money you'll save!!!

100 Years of International Women's Day - Happy International Women’s Day to women all over the world

iwd2011_6 International Women's Day 2011 marks the 100th such day in world history, and it is being celebrated today, March 8, 2011.Events are scheduled to take place in more than 100 countries around the world on March 8, 2011, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day.

In the United States, President Barack Obama proclaimed March 2011 to be "Women's History Month", calling Americans to mark IWD by reflecting on "the extraordinary accomplishments of women" in shaping the country's history. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton launched the "100 Women Initiative: Empowering Women and Girls through International Exchanges", on the eve of IWD.

The official International Women's Day Web site notes the following about the occasion:

International Women's Day (8 March) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, IWD is a national holiday.

The United Nations has given its full support to International Women's Day and it fights for women's rights as a major global issue.

Nicholas Kristof articulated three ideas for raising women's status around the world in a New York Times column today.

In 1910, the first international women's conference was held in Copenhagen and countries around the world began celebrating the event annually beginning the following year.

9 Steps to Achieve Your GOAL...

Steps to Achieve Your GOAL 1 Define your goal

The first step is to define your goal. Perhaps you've always dreamt about running a race or learning a new language? Maybe you're determined to seek a promotion or you simply want to shed a few kilos. Consider everything. What would you do if you had more time? What would you like to accomplish in the future? What do you regret about the past? In the words of motivational speaker Les Brown , "Your goals are the road maps that guide you and show you what is possible for your life." Whatever you choose, make sure your goal is specific, achievable and tangible.

2 Set your deadline

A goal without a deadline can be forever postponed, so set a deadline and aim to be as realistic as possible. If your goal is to lose a certain amount of weight for example, count on losing 2 pounds (around one kilo) per week. If you have your eye on that promotion, think about when your next appraisal is scheduled or another opportunity when you will have the chance to shine. Diana Scharf Hunt, author of The Tao of Time (Fireside), summed it up perfectly by saying, "Goals are dreams with deadlines."

3 Identify your purpose

True motivation comes from understanding your underlying purpose, so think about what that is. Ensure your goal is something that you really want and not what others want you to do. Ensure also, that the goal you have set is in line with your overall purpose. If your purpose is to get fit, then a weight-loss goal may not be in line with this - it is possible to be slim, but still be unfit. Instead, it should rather be, "To achieve the same fitness levels I had when I was 20".

4 Recognize the benefits

Determine, and better still, write down, the benefits you expect to enjoy from reaching your goal. Ask yourself what you will achieve from conquering your goal? Defining the benefits will help you to overcome moments of weakness. Evaluate these carefully and your goals will become much more attainable and your motivation increased. Lucy Mackintosh, NLP Coach and founder of The Law of Attraction Group in Dubai  says, "Write them on post-it notes and stick them on the fridge, in the car, on a mirror; by never losing sight of the benefits of success, your goal will remain at the forefront of your mind which will only strengthen your resolve."

5 Instill self-belief

You must believe your goal is achievable; unless you believe you can 100 per cent reach it, you will have no true motivation. Those who think they can and those who think they can't are both right; the power of positive thinking knows no end. According to Carolyn Mitchell, NLP Life Coach and owner of Blue Sky Life Coaching , "Affirmations are an excellent tool to promote self-belief and assure ourselves of positive outcomes. Begin with fast forwarding to the time when you have achieved your goal. Learn what it feels like [in your mind] to experience what the success of achieving your goal means to you. Feel it or see it for yourself. Once you have learned what success feels like, you simply can't unlearn' it. By writing, reading and re-experiencing those feelings of success over and over again you are essentially telling yourself what you want by believing that you already have it."

6 Spot the Obstacles

Now identify your potential obstacles. When suddenly faced with obstacles it can be difficult to remain focused and energetic. They can sap your energy, time and enthusiasm. What may hinder your progress? Old habits die hard and current mindsets can be difficult to shift, but identifying the obstacles will prepare you for the road ahead - forewarned is forearmed after all. "Be perfectly honest with yourself," says Carolyn, "this is the only way to identify all the possible problem areas. And only when you identify these can you develop strategies to minimise them."

7 Seek the Solutions

Think about how you can overcome these obstacles. What in your life needs changing? This is your opportunity to plan your strategies for handling the setbacks. If you consider each obstacle, one by one, you can easily identify a suitable solution; this may mean a change to your usual routine, enlisting the support of a friend or family member or a change to your current mindset. "If you can't find the solution yourself then ask someone who has achieved a similar goal how they did it" says Lucy, "or imagine you are sitting with a role model, a top athlete, for example. Ask them what to do and then put yourself in their shoes and give the advice they would give."

8 practice visualization

Take time to imagine that you have achieved your goal. What is it like? How do you feel? Excited? Exuberant? How has your life changed? How does it look, feel or sound? Capture that moment in your head and never lose sight of it. Try to make your vision so clear that you can perceive it with all five senses. The clearer the image in your mind, the easier it is to manifest into reality or in the words of Napoleon Hill, author of Think & Grow Rich (Ballantine Books), "What the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve."

9 Create your action plan

Create a step-by-step action plan detailing exactly what you need to do to achieve the goal. Remember in step one we identified that goals are the road maps that guide you? Well think of your action plan as the specific directions to get you to your destination, via the quickest and easiest route possible. Depending on the nature of your goal, identify any major milestones necessary to achieve it, then break down each milestone into specific tasks or steps. Sometimes just knowing where to start is hard, in which case enlist the support of others, be it friends, colleagues or a support group. Be prepared to journal the process. Writing things down helps to collate our thoughts, handle potholes and identify and deal with weaknesses. Strive to make progress every day. Every single day. And tell everyone you know about your goal - accountability is a great way to ensure that you do what needs to be done.

Centers Of Pilgrimages Are Sacred Spaces

Tirtha or pilgrimage occupies a central place in the rituals and practices of the faithfuls. The word tirtha is derived from the root tri, which means ‘to cross over' - that is, to go up or to go down. The word avatar is also derived from the same root; it means ‘to descend', ‘to come down'.

A tirtha is a place on earth where the gods descend and which facilitates the crossing over, enabling ascent of human beings from bhavasagar or the temporal and ephemeral world of naama and rupa, name and form, multiplicity and diversity, to the eternal abode of oneness, peace, tranquillity and bliss.

Tirtha really stood for knowledge as knowledge alone helps us get over ignorance and leads to liberation. It has now come to mean a sacred place which helps one to cross over from the cycle of birth and death to moksha or liberation. The Mahabharata says: “Just as certain parts of the body are called pure, so are certain parts of the earth and certain waters called holy”. These parts of the earth are called tirthas.

A tirtha is a ford, a crossing and a passageway by visiting which one could be freed of all sin. The metaphor of a ford or a bridge acts as a linking function, which among other things, brings together and links ideas, concepts, points of view and practices that are different. The bridge is not a stable habitat, you are not expected to stay or stand on it for long periods.

It is on the way from somewhere to somewhere, a transition. It connects the past with the present and future.

According to Tristhalisetu, a tirtha is a place where “whatever is sacrificed, chanted, given in charity, or suffered in penance, even in the smallest amount, yields endless fruit because of the power of that place... Whatever fruit is said to accrue from many thousands of lifetimes of asceticism, even more than that is obtainable from but three nights of fasting in this place”.

The Shiva Purana states that “the punyas earned in a tirtha destroy all sins - physical, mental and those committed through speech. At the same time evil actions done in a tirtha yield evil results of which one is not easily absolved”. It also warns not to indulge in immoral deeds in a tirtha because the evil results of an immoral action performed in a tirtha are multiplied manifold. It, therefore, advises that one should be extremely cautious about one's actions in the punyakshetra, the sacred region of a tirtha.

Tirthas have the power to cleanse the soul of its acquired sins. A tirtha is not only mokshada or bestower of liberation; it is also sukhda or bestower of happiness. It provides for both mukti or liberation and bhukti or enjoyment.

The various tirthas in India are spread out geographically, forming a mahaparikrama or mahapradakshina, the great circumambulation of the entire country.

Tirthas, therefore, yield not just spiritual gains; they help individuals familiarise themselves with the geographical vastness, cultural diversity and unity of the country. That probably was the aim of Indian sages in attaching a spiritual significance to each of the tirthas and persuading the populace to go around all of them to attain moksha. That is why Mark Twain has rightly observed that the tirthas are “older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend”.

Light As Metaphor For Lightness Of Being

The inner light, when it comes, heralds a higher state of consciousness. In time, that light blazes "as a million suns", as it is described in Indian scriptures. Even ordinary people, long before they even see the inner light, use light as a metaphor for any sort of mental awakening.

As sunlight entering the ocean loses power at increasing depths, and finally becomes invisible, so with divine light as it enters human consciousness. Many forms of life that live at great depths produce luminescence of their own, to compensate for the absence of outer light.

Even so, the delusion-darkened ego produces its own version of spiritual awareness by the excitement it generates in its relation to matter.

People's awareness darkens as their awareness becomes denser with matter-identification. This is the way cosmic creation is manifested.

The denser our consciousness, the less spiritual light is able to penetrate mental fog. If we are deeply identified with matter, we find it difficult to think clearly.

People who are completely identified with their bodies consider the senses and sense pleasures the ultimate of existence. Seldom, if ever, do they have an abstract thought. By nature they are reactive, not active in a creative sense. A clear mind is a sign, outwardly, that the inner light also is clear. A dull mind, on the other hand, is a sign that the inner light is dull and unfocused.

The English language contains two meanings for light. The first meaning is the opposite of darkness. The second meaning pertains to lightness of weight.

This coincidence expresses a truth: The more light in our consciousness, the more light-weighted we feel in awareness.

Influences that increase this sense of lightness increase also the mind's receptivity to visible light. Dense, heavy foods, however, cloud the mind and make its consciousness heavy. Too much sleep darkens the mind and results in sluggish thinking.

Alcoholic beverages and consciousness-changing drugs darken the mind, as also too much sensory stimulation and sensual indulgence.

All activity, in fact, that absorbs us in materiality, and that lessens our spiritual awareness, obscures the mind, reducing its clarity.

The spiritual reason for moral living, then, is that it lightens our consciousness, loosens our shackles of ego and matter-consciousness, and attunes us more sensitively to the redeeming inner light.

Diving redemption means withdrawing from identification with delusion, and becoming inwardly absorbed in the light of truth.

When the sky is darkened by clouds, the sunlight grows dim: not because its power is any weaker, but because the intervening vapour obscures it.

Darkness enters our consciousness because of attachment to material grossness. Mental clarity is affected also by clouds of doubt and restlessness, emotion such as fear, anger and hatred. Anything that prevents us from seeing life with dispassion, obscures the inner light.

Paramhansa Yogananda pointed out in Autobiography of a Yogi that samadhi or supreme ecstasy cannot come through mere intellectual willingness or open-mindedness. It comes in time with a natural inevitability to the sincere devotee.

It is steadfast deep devotion rather than passivity or force that enables absorption in the light. Most important is an attitude of loving receptivity towards Christ consciousness or Kuthastha Chaitanya, through that one whom God has ordained as your true, or sat, guru.

Know that you are unique

If you pause for a moment to consider that there never has been nor will there ever be anyone else exactly like you, you will know why being yourself is more important than anything else; and you will be able to sidestep the very commonly prevalent fear or pressure that traps us into blind conformity.

The opposite of courage in our society, psychologist Rollo May said, is not cowardice; it is conformity.

Being inspired by someone and learning from their example is wonderful; but if we were supposed to be exactly like that someone, we would have been created with all of her personal qualities, also circumstances, potential, limitations too. Instead, each of us is born into a specific time and place, with a unique combination of a certain set of talents, and the potential to add or enhance all that, in order to fulfill our individual mission in life.

We have all been taught to measure ourselves against the example of other, greater, more successful beings. We are inspired by them and want to follow their example...but we can become so obsessed with the need to live like someone else, look, teach, grow successful and become rich like someone else, that before we know it, we cease to be ourselves.

In the film The Legend of Bagger Vance, Bagger Vance volunteers to be caddy for the has-been, written-off golfer Junuh in an important tournament. At a pivotal point in the movie, he tells the indifferent player, "Inside each and every one of us is our one true authentic swing. Something we were born with. Something that's ours and ours alone. Something that can't be learned. Something that's got to be remembered."

It suggests finding our authentic self, our special place in the world, our special way of doing things, our special things to do, that absolutely no one else can.

Once, an old Hassidic story goes, the great teacher Zusia came to his followers, his eyes were red with tears, and his face was pale with fear.

"Zusia, what's the matter? You look frightened!"

"The other day, i had a vision. In it, i learned of the question that the angels will ask me when i stand at the Gates of Heaven."

The followers were puzzled. "Zusia, you are pious. You are scholarly and humble. You have helped so many of us. What question about your life could be so terrifying that you would be frightened to answer it?"

Zusia turned his gaze to heaven. "I have learned that the angels will not ask me, 'Why weren't you a Moses, leading your people out of slavery?'"

His followers persisted. "So, what will they ask you?"

"And i have learned," Zusia sighed, "that the angels will not ask me, 'Why weren't you a Joshua, leading your people into the Promised Land?'"

His worried followers demanded, "But what will they ask you?"

"They will say to me, 'Zusia, there was only one thing that no power of heaven or earth could have prevented you from becoming.' They will say, 'Zusia, why weren't you Zusia?'"

Of course you should be inspired by the examples of others and let their lives motivate you to reach your fullest potential; but ultimately you must become the best [place your own name here] possible.

Or, as Oscar Wilde quipped: Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

Donkey-like, We Carry Burden Of Knowledge

There was a man who dealt in scrap. He would buy junk and sell it off in the local market. He used a donkey to transport the stuff. He would also buy old books for resale. All this, the donkey would carry on its back.

The donkey previously belonged to a washer man and so was used to carrying dirty clothes. But now the animal was 'promoted', carrying books full of wisdom - volumes containing works of PhD students, vedanta, yoga, fiction, history and science.

So would you say the donkey was now a scholar, a sage?

What would you call people who have burdened their minds with such books? Books give you information with which you load your mind. The donkey carried piles of books and continued to be a donkey, ignorant of true knowledge. Similarly, just by reading scriptures and other writings, you cannot become wise.

I have come here to help you unlearn what you have learnt, so that you can become pristine, pure and innocent. This can happen only when you forget all that you have heard, known and believed until now for all that is untrue.

That's why despite so much reading and listening, you are still unhappy, ignorant. There has been no transformation, no change in you.

Just listening is not a big thing. Our scriptures emphasise contemplation. Within your heart there is thirst that is why you are attending this satsang. When you listen just ask yourself why you are listening. There could be many reasons for your being here. One is that if you go to satsang, you may get to listen something new.

Very often, when people return home after listening to a discourse, they continue discussing the topic with family and friends. People are habitual listeners; they don't go as seekers.

They go to hear what new information will be delivered. So the orators bring up new topics to keep your interest going. But people talk as if they have absorbed whatever they have heard.

Why are you listening? To collect information! So that you can boast about it to others, to talk about it to those who were not present. It is not how much you do, but how you do something. It is not about how long you meditate, but how deep you go in meditation that is important. It is not the quantity but quality that matters.

The day you stop seeking for the happiness in the outside world that is the day when you become truly contented. Then you won't wander hither thither looking for happiness in different places because your thirst for happiness gets quenched in prayer, in remembering the Lord's name, in meditation.

Truly speaking that is the day when you become a spiritual -- dharmic person, in the true sense of the word.

All that you desire is right there within you, it is with you but you don't have that will to seek. The work of sages is not to give you knowledge; the work of mystics is to light that fire within, to inculcate a longing, a feeling of restlessness inside you.

This longing makes you spiritual or dharmic in the true sense of the word. This longing makes you sing, cry, dance in remembrance of God. This is what it means to think of the Lord, this is what is meant by chanting, this is what is meant by remembrance.

Unlike science, religion is not a tradition

During a service at an old synagogue in Eastern Europe, when the prayer was being said, half the congregants stood up while the other half remained seated. Those who were seated started yelling at those standing to sit down, and the ones standing yelled at the ones sitting to stand up. The rabbi, learned as he was in law and commentaries didn't know what to do.

His congregation suggested that he consult a 98-year-old man, who was one of the original founders of the temple. The rabbi hoped the elderly man would be able to tell him what the actual temple tradition was. So he went to the nursing home with a representative of each faction of the congregation. The one whose followers stood during the prayer said to the old man, "Is it the tradition to stand during this prayer?" The old man answered, "No, that is not the tradition". The one whose followers sat asked, "Is it the tradition to sit during the prayer?"

The old man answered, "No, that is not the tradition". Then the rabbi said to the old man, "The congregants fight all the time, yelling at each other about whether they should sit or stand!" The old man interrupted, exclaiming, "THAT is our tradition!"

Religion is not in the tradition, nor in rituals. Religion has no adjective to describe it. Religion is simply religion, as love is love. Can we call love Christian, Hindu, Muslim? If love is neither Christian nor Hindu nor Islamic, then why should God be Christian, Hindu or Jewish? Has not Jesus said "God is Love"? The enlightened ones have reminded: No one can be born into a religion; rather, religion has to be born into you. One has to open one's soul and receive religion. In the church it is not, in the mosque or synagogue it is not, in the temple it is not. Osho points out, "Science depends on tradition. Without a Newton, without an Edison, there is no possibility for Albert Einstein to have existed at all.

He needs a certain tradition; only on that tradition, on the shoulders of the past giants in the world of science, he can stand. Of course, when you stand on the shoulders of somebody you can look a little farther than the person on whose shoulders you are standing, but that person is needed there. "Science is a tradition, but religion is not a tradition: it is an individual experience, utterly individual. Once something is known in the world of science it need not be discovered again, it will be foolish to discover it again.Youneed not discover the theory of gravitation, Newton has done it. You need not go and sit in a garden and watch an apple fall and then conclude that there must be some force in the earth that pulls it downwards; it will be simply foolish. Newton has done it; now it is part of human tradition... But in religion you have to discover again and again. No discovery becomes a heritage in religion".

A master, such as Osho, teaches us that God's way of being present in the world is His absence. He is not present by being present. God is present by being absent. That is His way of being present in the world. You cannot pinpoint: here is God. If you pinpoint, it will be something else, not God, a statue, a scripture, a radition, a morality, but not religion, not God. God is everywhere! His way of presence is to be absent, and this is hat a master teaches you.

      • This is the true joy in life, being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one, being a true force of Nature instead of a feverish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community, and, as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can.

I want to be thoroughly used up when I die. For the harder I work, the more I love. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no brief candle to me. It’s a sort of splendid torch which I’ve got to hold up for the moment and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.
