Suicides in India ,Facts and Stats !

More than one lakh persons (1,25,017) in the country lost their lives by committing suicide during the year 2008.

This indicates an increase of 1.9% over the previous year's figure (1,22,637). The number of suicides in the country during the decade (1998–2008) has recorded an increase of 19.4% (from 1,04,713 in 1998 to 1,25,017 in 2008).The population has increased by 18.8% during the decade but the rate of suicides in 2008 was 10.8 which is the same as in 1998.

After reading these lines I didn’t know what to do because I never expected the numbers will be so high and I decided to write this post because the report was lengthy and people are so busy they cannot read entire report and I want to them to know what a ground reality is and the society we live in have something to say..

  1. West Bengal has reported the highest number of suicides (14,852) accounting for 11.9% of total suicides followed by
  2. Tamil Nadu (14,425)
  3. Maharashtra (14,374)
  4. Andhra Pradesh (14,354) each accounting for nearly 11.5% of the total suicides in the country
  5. Karnataka (12,222) accounting for 9.8% of the suicides in the country.
  6.  These 5 States together accounted for 56.2% of the total suicides reported in the country.
  7. The remaining 43.8% suicides were reported in the rest of 23 States and 7 UTs.
  8. Delhi has reported the highest number of suicides (1,303) among UTs,

Causes of Suicides

‘Family Problems’ and ‘Illness’, accounting for 23.8% and 21.9% respectively, were the major causes of suicides among the specified causes. ‘Love Affairs’ (3.0%), ‘Bankruptcy’, ‘Dowry Dispute’ and 'Poverty' (2.4% each) were the other causes driving people towards suicides.Suicides due to ‘Illness’, 'Drug Abuse/Addiction' and ‘Poverty’ have shown an increasing trend during last 3 years. Suicides due to ‘Property Dispute' have shown a declining trend during last 3 years whereas suicides due to all the other specified reasons have shown a mixed trend during this period.

The number of suicides due to ‘Illegitimate Pregnancy' and 'Ideological Causes / Hero Worshipping' showed a sharp increase of 50.6% and 50.2% respectively as compared to previous year, followed by ‘Death of Dear Person' (41.7%), ‘Divorce’ (22.4%), 'Physical Abuse (Rape, Incest etc)' (20.3%), 'Drug Abuse / Addiction’ (17.1%) and 'Failure in Examination' (10.8%).

Social Status of Suicide Victims

The information on the marital status of suicide victims has been presented in  It was observed that 70.3% of the suicide victims were married while 22.1% were unmarried.Divorcees and Separated have accounted for about 3.3% of the total suicide victims. The proportion of Widow & Widower victims was around 4.3%.

The means adopted for committing suicide

varied from the easily available means such as consumption of poison, jumping into the well,etc. to more painful means such as self inflicted injuries, hanging, shooting, etc. Suicide by Consuming Poison (34.8%), Hanging (32.2%),Self Immolation (8.8%) and Drowning (6.7%) were the prominent means of committing suicides as in past.

Suicide is a permanent solution for a temporary problem and I don't know why people take such a heinous degrading decisions and Life is a gift why to waste it like that I accept every one will have their own problems and sufferings ,Love failure,exam failure are these a reasons to die for .don't know what's happening to people and I was very much upset after seeing all these stats and cannot blame any one ,every one have their own problems but definitely suicide is not a solution.
