How much do you know about Creative Commons?

Creative commons a popular term and its slogan some rights reserved we see it all the time but very few bothered to check what creative commons means and its background .Because of CC now we can use amazing photos from flickr and other sites legally and data from Wikipedia as we want .logo_cc_trademark

In their own words

Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization

We work to increase the amount of creativity (cultural, educational, and scientific content) in “the commons” — the body of work that is available to the public for free and legal sharing, use, repurposing, and remixing.

There are six major licenses of the Creative Commons:

  1. Attribution (CC-BY)
  2. Attribution Share Alike (CC-BY-SA)
  3. Attribution No Derivatives (CC-BY-ND)
  4. Attribution Non-Commercial (CC-BY-NC)
  5. Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike (CC-BY-NC-SA)
  6. Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND)

There are four major conditions of the Creative Commons:

  1. Attribution (BY), requiring attribution to the original author;
  2. Share Alike (SA), allowing derivative works under the same or a similar license (later or jurisdiction version);
  3. Non-Commercial (NC), requiring the work is not used for commercial purposes;
  4. and No Derivative Works (ND), allowing only the original work, with out derivatives

So next time you going to use some one else’s data check whether it is under cc or not and also now you know what type of license exist and you know what to do!

About the Company: Creative Commons (CC) is a non-profit organization headquartered in San Francisco, California, United States devoted to expanding the range of creative works available for others to build upon legally and to share. The organization has released several copyright-licenses known as Creative Commons licenses for free to the public. These licenses allow creators to communicate which rights they reserve, and which rights they waive for the benefit of recipients or other creators. Wikipedia is one of the notable web-based projects using one of its licenses.

Creative Commons licenses are international — over 80 countries have their own CC projects — and something licensed under CC in the USA can be combined with Israeli, Indian, Brazilian, Spanish, British, South African and German CC works without violating the terms of any of their licenses.
